STATIC  BALANCE TASKS

Instruction:
With your eyes closed and feet together,
Maintain your balance for 20 seconds without making any errors.
The tester times 20 sec, recording time to first error & counts number of errors.
Start timing when athlete is set and closes their eyes.
“I only go when you close your eyes”

Instruction:
With your eyes closed, balance on your non dominant leg.
Lift your dominant leg forwards with your foot 30cm above the surface.
Keep your balance for 20 seconds without making any errors.
The tester times 20 sec, recording time to first error & counts number of errors.
Start timing when athlete is set and closes their eyes.
“I only go when you close your eyes”

Instruction:
With your eyes closed, stand heel to toe with dominant foot at the back.
Your weight even on both feet and your knees held straight.
Keep your balance for 20 seconds without making any errors.
The tester times for 20 sec, recording time to first error & counts the number of errors.
Start timing when athlete is set and closes their eyes.
“I only go when your eyes are closed”

Errors to count:

  • Hands lifted off hips
  • Opening eyes
  • Stumble or fall out of position
  • Shifting the balance leg out of position
  • Moving hip of elevated leg out sideways
  • Elevated leg touches the balancing leg
  • Lifting front or back of the foot
  • Staying out of position for longer than 5 seconds counts as an extra error.

DYNAMIC BALANCE & CO-ORDINATION TASKS

1. Tandem Gait (best time of 4 trials)

Instruction:
Place a 4cm wide tape on a flat surface, in a straight line to a length of 3 m.
With feet together behind line & hands on hips,
Walk heel to toe as quickly as possible along the line.
Once past the end of the line, turn around quickly behind the line (not on the line)
Using either foot, get straight back on the line, heel to toe, back to the start = 6 m in total.
Aim to complete all trials under 14 seconds with no mistakes / errors.
Any error means a failure = DNF
Record the best time for an error free trial.
Once athlete is ready, “On your marks, get set, GO”

 

Errors to count:

  • Taking longer than 14 seconds
  • Stepping or falling off the line
  • Separating both feet from one another
  • Taking hands off hips
  • Not turning behind the line

NB – standing on toe is NOT counted as an error.

Instruction:
Sitting comfortably with your dominant arm outstretched at shoulder height …
Use your index finger to touch the tip of your nose …
Quickly return to the extended starting position (shown).
Perform 5 repetitions in 4 seconds or less.
It’s a pass / fail test.
