Concussion Management

Concussion management programs have been developed by medical experts to provide A to Z solutions to concussion.

Advanced technology has enabled the design of concussion tests compatible with computers and mobile devices. Carefully co-ordinated concussion recovery tools and programs have been developed to assess recovery prior to the safe return to school, work or play.

Multidisciplinary Approach to Concussion Treatment

Treatment of concussion is now a multidisciplinary approach. Symptoms are individually treated with safe medication; parents, coaches and athletes are educated as to the probable physical, emotional and cognitive results of concussion. Psychotherapy and neurotherapy may be a part of the management program for difficult concussion cases.

Benefits of Concussion Testing

Sensitive computerised baseline tests conducted pre-season are tools capable of measuring normal brain function in athletes. This data is compared with the results of concussion tests after injury to assess whether any impaired brain function is present.

The Sports Concussion Programme has developed a versatile range of concussion tests that deliver results within minutes. Does the Brain Need Rest?

It is unknown exactly how much time the brain needs to recover from concussion. Because the brain is active even when at rest, pure rest is not possible.

During the initial stages of recovery from concussion it is necessary to take a break from activities that will result in pulse or blood pressure changes, as well as complex cognitive tasks such as thinking, learning and concentrating. However, it inadvisable to prolong periods of inactivity unnecessarily, as this may result in undesirable mood changes for athletes.

With this in mind a return to brain function should be gradual, with the early stages encompassing eye exercises, balance training and body position sense drills, while monitoring the effect these have on concussion symptoms. By gradually returning to full function, the athlete is able to rest from activities that can potentially delay or hamper recovery while also undertaking gentle exercises that facilitate rehabilitation and prevent fixation on returning to their sport.

Concussion recovery tools are successfully used to evaluate post-concussion recovery. The Sports Concussion Programme offers a variety of recovery programs including Balance and Vision Training, Back-To-School  and Back-To-Exercise.
